ASLI ÖZTÜRK

Aslı Öztürk was born in Istanbul in 1980.


At the age of 9, she started rhythmic gymnastics at Istanbul Netaş Sports Club and began dance training at Istanbul University State Conservatory’s Classical Ballet Department immediately after primary school. She completed her middle and high school education at Istanbul University State Conservatory between 1991-1997, and then pursued her undergraduate studies in the Modern Dance Department at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University between 1998-2002. Following her undergraduate studies, she received training at Le Centre National de Danse Contemporaine Angers in France between 2002-2003.


Upon returning to Istanbul in 2003, she started working, producing, and sharing life with Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası and was a dancer, instructor, and choreographer in the company for 20 years until 2023.


In 2005, she was selected to participate in D.A.N.C.E (Dance Apprentice Network aCross Europe), a two-year interdisciplinary program under the artistic direction of renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Frederic Flamand, Wayne McGregor, and Angelin Preljocaj, and completed the program in July 2007.


Between 2007-2011, she served as a contracted instructor at Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory’s Contemporary Dance Department, where she taught classical ballet, modern dance technique, and repertoire classes for contemporary dancers.


In 2011, she joined the State Opera and Ballet MDT Istanbul Project as a dance artist under the artistic direction of Beyhan Murphy, and was both a dancer and instructor in the company between 2011-2014.


In 2016, she resumed teaching at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatory’s Contemporary Dance Department and completed her MA degree in the Contemporary Dance Department. In 2018, after completing the Art Proficiency Program, she became an associate professor in the department.


Throughout her career, she has worked with both local and international choreographers such as Angelin Preljocaj (D.A.N.C.E), Annabel Lopez (MDT), Avi Kasier – Sergio Antonino (Ç.A.K), Aydın Teker, Beyhan Murphy (MDT), Candaş Baş, Charles Cré-Ange (Ç.A.K), Diane Elshout/Frank Handeler (Ç.A.K), Emilio Calcagno – Olivier Dubois, Frederic Flamand(D.A.N.C.E), Handan Ergiydiren, İhsan Rüstem (MDT), Melih Kıraç (ÇAK), Mihran Tomasyan (Ç.A.K), Michael Poper (MDT), Rosa Mei, Tuğçe Tuna, Wayne McGregor (D.A.N.C.E), William Forsythe (D.A.N.C.E)


Since 2002, she has been creating her own choreographies, focusing on profound themes such as existence, gender dynamics, self-discovery, and the transient nature of being. Öztürk uses body-oriented awareness practices as a tool in the choreography creation process and explores the effects of these processes on artistic expression. She has also been interested in the relationship between new media technologies and the body for a long time.

Öztürk’s first solo, Chidvilas, was a finalist at the 11th International Solo Dance Festival in Stuttgart. In 2012, her work Kontrol was staged in various venues in Sweden as part of a cultural exchange program between Sweden and Turkey, organized by Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası and Musik Gävleborg. The performance On-air, a co-production of Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası and Vertigo Flight Effects, was featured at the Scenography Biennial Stuttgart in 2012. In 2014, she produced the work KIZ DOĞDU for the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet MDT Istanbul Project, which was later developed and staged under the umbrella of Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası. She has also produced repertory works such as Velocity, So’hum (I am That), and KOAN for the Contemporary Dance Department of Istanbul State Conservatory. In 2022, she created the short piece Daire’ye Dair-1 for the mixed night “Bir Bedenden İçeri” of İDOB MDTIstanbul Project. In the same year, she produced the performance Emanet Zemin for the 5th solo exhibition of Gözde İlkin, curated by Duygu Demir at ArtSümer Gallery. Since 2009, she has choreographed and staged numerous plays for State Theatres and City Theatres in various regions of Turkey.


After attending her first 10-day Vipassana Meditation course in Kuşadası, İzmir in 2014, meditation became an important part of her life and a significant tool to deepen the body/mind relationship. Since then, Öztürk has been regularly attending 10-day Vipassana Meditation courses, especially in India, France, and the UK.


In 2018, Öztürk completed the 200-hour Sivananda Yoga TTC program, and she is currently exploring ways to integrate her Western-based contemporary dance education with Eastern-based practices and teachings in her personal practice as both an instructor and choreographer.


Currently working as an associate professor at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Istanbul State Conservatory Contemporary Dance Department, Öztürk continues to participate in various projects as a dancer, choreographer, and instructor, and also conducts workshops in various places around the world.
